Stubborn or frozen pegs can usually be be freed up by turning them backwards first. If not, bring them into the shop and we can get them free and productive again at little cost.
Pegs that slip can usually be fixed with a drop of alcohol where the end peg and the outside scroll box intersect. Do not get alcohol on the finish as it can damage the varnish. Peg work can also be more long term at our violin shop. The cost to repair pegs, in most cases, is minimal.
An alternate way to fix pegs is by using the commercial “peg drops.” In order to use these peg drops, you must relax the strings and slide the pegs ever so slightly out to receive a small drop. It takes three days of use of the begs to become smooth again.
